My first encounter with the virtual realm was in 1991 when I pursued my Ph.D. I used various earlier VR systems to calculate the intercooler’s distance (i.e., the distance you can see) and adapt depth concepts into the program. While I was a firm fan of the virtual world, I found the experience somewhat painful. It wasn’t because of the inability to be loyal. However, I knew that it would improve, but simply because it was a bit uncomfortable to put a scuba mask over my face for an extended amount of time.
Even with the earliest 3D glasses (like shuttering glasses that let you see 3D with flat displays), I felt that being in captivity didn’t dissipate. I had to keep my eyes open like the world was blindfolded. My only goal was open the blindfold and let the virtual reality’s power flow into my physical world.
It brought me back to the US. The Air Force was given a direction Air Force to develop a virtual fixtures system, which is a platform that allows users to engage with objects in virtual reality that have been appropriately integrated into the perception of the real world. It was similar to before words such as “enhanced reality” or “mixed reality” were invented. However, even in those initial times, watching users excitedly explore the prototypes of systems, I believed there was a chance that the next generation of computers was a seamless integration of virtual and accurate information displayed to us.
Reduced to 30 years ago, the term “metaverse” has suddenly become an angry word. However, the technology to support virtual reality technology is lighter, cheaper, shorter, and more durable. Yet the same issues that I had to face in the past three decades are still there. Wearing a scuba mask is indeed uncomfortable for most people, and this makes you feel disconnected from the world in a manner that’s not normal.
Metaverse is a popular choice, and it could be an enhanced reality environment accessible through C-Through lenses. This is even if the complete virtual reality hardware offers significantly higher satisfaction levels. It is a fact that visual integrity isn’t an element that can determine widespread adoption. Instead, the adoption process will be facilitated by technology, which gives the most realistic and natural experience to our perceptual system. The most efficient method of presenting digital content to our perceptual system is integrating it directly into the physical world.
A certain amount of loyalty is necessary; however, the most important is the consistency of data. In this sense, I am saying that all signals from the senses (such as sound, sight motion, touch, and) connect to a shared mental model of the world in your brain. In the case of Augmented Reality, this could be achieved with very low visual fidelity as long as the virtual components are interpreted locally and within you consistently. Furthermore, because our perception of dispersion (i.e., sense of distance) is quite dense, it’s not hard to determine the length.
For virtual reality, it’s tough to create an integrated image of reality. It may be surprising because it’s straightforward for VR equipment to offer stunning visuals with high-quality resolution without delay or distortion. However, unless you’re using expensive and inefficient hardware, your body will be standing or sitting, while most virtual experiences require movement. This inconsistency causes your brain to build and maintain two distinct models of the world around you, one for your physical world and the virtual world displayed in your headset.
Suppose I inform people that they tend to forget what’s happening within their headsets. Their brain can still keep track of their body while sitting in their chair, within the same room. In particular, they’ll have their feet positioned on the floor in a specific direction. (Etc.). Due to this incompatibility of perception, your brain has to maintain the two models of your mind. There are methods to lessen the effect, but it’s only when you mix the real and virtual reality to create a cohesive impression (that is, making the development of a holistic mental model) that the issue is solved.
That’s why the enhanced reality will be handed down to all of the earth. It won’t just replace the virtual world as our main gateway to the Metaverse and take over the current environment of desktops and phones as the primary means of accessing digital content. Walking along the street with your head bowed and watching the phone with your fingers isn’t the best method for our perceptual system to perceive content. Reality has been reconstructed, so I am convinced that air-based devices and applications will be dominant over desktops and phones within our lives in the next ten years.
This can open up unique opportunities for designers and artists, teachers, entertainers, and other professionals because they will be capable of transforming our world with ways to surpass the limitations (see Metaverse 2030, for example). In addition, it will give us superpowers that allow every one of us to transform our world within one glance or just a blink. It will be genuine if designers concentrate on constant conceptual cues that nourish our brains and more minor on total loyalty. This was a significant discovery for me when I began working with AR and VR at the start of the 90s, which led me to give the concept the name of Empirical Design.
Shortly, the concept of the top platform companies of the Metaverse, which is currently populated with cartoony avatars, is not valid. The virtual world will become more popular for socializing. However, it is not the method through which immersive media can transform society. The real Metaverse – that will become the primary platform of our lives is a mature world. In 2030, it will be all over the world.
